In 2015 or was it 2016(?) things were in flux. I was re-evaluating what I was doing, where I was headed, what I wanted… There were a number of things going on that led to this, but it was one of those moments that didn’t seem particularly extraordinary or even interesting, but in hindsight I […]

First things first. My mother sent me two videos this week and both are too wonderful to not pass along. The text within this video roughly translates to: “What an animal concert: The Cologne pianist Thelonious Herrmann came up with this unusual idea. He took his piano to the Koln Zoo to play among goats,… Continue reading Videos From My Mother and Other News!

read moreThese words were written by author Arundhati Roy. They are the concluding paragraphs of her article published in Financial Times in April, 2020, called "The Pandemic is a Portal".
Her words so clearly sum up my dreams and hopes for this difficult time we are traversing.
I have to follow them with the little quilt I made early in the summer and posted a short while back, expressing my hopes for a new way of living being created from the old. You can see the new ways and ...

Ten (10!) years ago I started a series of quilts, my own personal challenge project. I was feeling the need of having some small, relaxing, just for fun projects in the midst of working on quilt repairs for clients.
I had been given a stash of decorator samples by an interior designer who was cleaning out her studio. I decided to use them for my play space. I set myself these rules:
--- I had to use all the colorways of each fabric together in the same little quilt.
--- The ... read more
Just about ten days ago New York City was enjoying a less than 1% infection rate. We are now at about 17.6 cases for every 100,000 people, which is still relatively small when compared to other parts of the country. But in densely populated areas like Manhattan it doesn’t take much to infect a great… Continue reading The Pandemic & Stitching Anyway
read moreAs our internet is FINALLY up and running and my email is now, miraculously and somewhat bizarrely suddenly working again, I decided yesterday afternoon to do an impromptu live stream. It was very last minute, and touch and go, as the internet began misbehaving the minute I tried to live stream, but in the end… Continue reading The Pandemic & Life
read moreI’ve been working away on my latest project: “Stitch Along With Ariane”, which is actually a Zoom Series that will span 8 weeks, with a weekly Zoom meet-up to discuss the past week’s lesson, and the following week’s stitches. I’m working on the background stitching while awaiting the last of my threads to arrive. I’m… Continue reading Designing, Ripping Out & A Video From My Mother
read moreThis is a challenge project from the Just Wanna Quilt Facebook group. We each got 2 packets of swatches from Free Spirit Fabrics, and the instructions were “make whatever you want”. I looked at these luscious colors, and decided I need some of that brightness and beauty in these hard times.
Casting around for ideas, I remembered a set of three little pieces I'd made back in the '80s that I'd also made with 2" multicolored squares. These were a color theory experiment. All have the same base with varied ideas for coloring the circle shapes. #1 is ...
read moreThis is my newest art quilt - I didn't start out to make a topical quilt. I was just playing with some gorgeous swatches.
I have mentioned on this blog before how much I love challenge quilts. This challenge is another one from the Just Wanna Quilt facebook group. I looked at these luscious colors, and decided I need some of that brightness and beauty in these hard times. We each got 2 packets of swatches from Free Spirit Fabrics, and the instructions were “make whatever you want”.
My plan was to make two little quilt tops exactly the same ...
read moreIf you’re a weaver, you probably know that this isn’t an ideal end to a weaving project! I have been avoiding finishing up my looper rug project because I knew I was running out of warp. Silly, right? Like the warp fairy would come in the middle of the night and add 12″…. In all the years that I have been using the loopers, I never remember to add enough “take up” for the warp. (That means that the loopers are fat and take up a lot of room and thus warp.) The result is that I have ...

So, having just blogged about my entry in the Eye Contact show yesterday morning, this post about the exhibit showed up in the evening on my instagram! (It's in two pieces because I couldn't screen shot the whole thing in one go.)
All healthy, so no worries there, in case any of you noticed my absence and were worried. The whole situation in which we find ourselves took over my attention and energy, and certainly my ability to express it all in words. But I’ve been busy, and here’s what I’ve been doing. It’s been a while, so this will be long! Grab an iced tea (in my hemisphere anyway), and settle in.
— I haven’t been doing much quilt repair. At first, I was too ... read more
The other day my husband and I had a socially distanced, mask-wearing get-together with friends. Okay, so we didn’t keep our masks on once we were seated the acceptable, government authorized 6 feet apart from one another, but we behaved responsibly. Why am I feeling that I need to add something like – “no really,… Continue reading NYC, Designing & “Good” Ideas
read more It was last year when I purchased several pre-printed panels. I made a small wall hanging as a daily reminder to me to have a grateful heart. It resides on the pantry door and I see it often during the day.
A couple of months later I put together another small wall hanging to use as a gift. I used an accent color to frame the main part, and added butterflies for an accent.
That left a larger section to divide up or use together. I knew I wanted to add a narrow frame around the next batch and blend ...
My concentration is still iffy but I have managed to get a few things done and a lot started!
One fun, little project I have been doing is making pillowcases. Knitters love making socks, weavers love making hand towels and quilters love making pillowcases. We have always used bolster pillows on our bed and when we were first married, I embroidered our initials on them. When I got over stitching our initials, I bought unusual cases. But it was the wonderful quiltmaker, Jane Sassaman who really inspired me. Scroll to the bottom of this blog to see the delightful cases ...
read moreWhen I am feeling stressed, I have trouble concentrating. Normally I am full of ideas for projects that I want to try, but not in times like these. I need something soothing, dull, repetitive. Something I can work on, using my ear buds, listening to music that I can hum to.
When I lived in Japan, my mother became ill and a two week Home Leave turned into two months. Peter went back to work in Tokyo, and I stayed in Mom’s apartment (with my sister (ugh)). Luckily I had brought hand stitching with me; I was working on ...
read moreI am happy to announce that my daughter, aka my darlin' daughter, just finished making a gorgeous quilt. She's always been an artist and a crafter and now a great DIYer, but as far as fiber goes, she's been much more smitten with crochet and clothing than with quilting.
But quilting made its big debut because a new baby needs a great quilt. The new baby in question is her boyfriend's brand new nephew. The boyfriend loves astronomy, and the two of them planned a solar system quilt to introduce the new little one to his new ... read more
And we've been having such a good time, we decided to try our first retreat, a week ago. Here's a view on the road. It wasn't taken on the retreat property, but is such a perfect symbol of driving to a peaceful, joyful place.
